National Star Foundation, Pittville

Our Practice was involved of the provision of full Civil and Structural Engineering services for this interesting project in Cheltenham. The new buildings are predominantly of timber construction all supported by mass concrete trench fill foundations. For the drainage a major diversion was required and this involved complex negotiations with the relevant statutory bodies.

Berry Wormington Barns

Our Practice has been involved in design work associated with the redevelopment of a series of derelict barns in the north of the County. The barns are predominantly of traditional construction, and our Practice has been involved with the introduction of new floors and strengthening measures as required as part of the redeveloped agricultural buildings. The project has also involved an element of new build, with also a high degree of strengthening and repair works to the existing traditional buildings.

Lawnstone

Architect – Sustain by Design Value – £2.1m

Our Practice has provided Civil and Structural Engineering services for this complex project in Coleford, Gloucestershire. The project is multi use with a mixed retail and residential block in the northern sector of the site and a purely residential block in the southern part of the site. The retail/residential block comprises a trussed rafter roof and precast first floor, all of which is supported by load bearing masonry walls and traditional footings. The southern/residential block comprises a timber framed structure designed and supplied by a specialist. We have designed the foundations for this element. Again we have provided full Civil and drainage services for the site, involving complex negotiations with the local Council to ensure that the approvals can be discharged for the new development.

Fairford Primary School

Working for Beard Construction our Practice has provided full Civil and Structural Engineering services facilitating a major extension to the existing primary school. The main element of the construction comprises a steel frame structure with a composite roof system including long span decking, all of which is braced against wind for lateral stability with cross bracing in designated bays. The walling system comprises a specialist SFS composite panel system. A predominantly steel framed link building connects the new extension to the original school. Various alteration works have also been carried out within the existing school to facilitate the desired arrangement as instructed by Gloucestershire County Council and the school. Again we have provided full Civil and drainage services via our partners, Infrastructure Design Studio which has necessitated the design of extensive remodelling to the stormwater drainage system incorporating large soakaways. As with any project of this type the foul system connects back into the existing sewer system.

Severn Vale School

2016-2018

Our Practice has provided full Civil and Structural Engineering services for the redevelopment and extension of Severn Vale School in Gloucester. The project has involved the design of a three-storey steel framed extension appended to the existing main block of the school. The structure comprises an arrangement of steel beams supported by steel columns with composite metal deck floors. Due to the proximity of the extension to the existing school, a complex arrangement of counterbalance beam foundations were required for the three-storey extension. Our Practice has also been involved in the design of a single storey extension to the sports hall using timber frame and extensive remodelling in the science block. Design support work has also been provided for various other internal alteration and modification works. This has included the installation of a lift within the reinforced concrete frame of the main building. Our Practice was responsible for the design of the civil and structural engineering works on the project including a four-storey accommodation block utilising a mixture of load bearing masonry and timber with the civils element comprising the design of drainage and a complex diversion of an existing mains run traversing the property.

High School for Girls, Denmark Road

Our Practice was responsible for the full design of the building utilising a steel frame with precast plank floors and masonry wall cladding. The building sits under a pitched roof comprising composite members on purlins on the structural steel frame. The foundations are of traditional mass concrete construction with a suspended ground slab.

Our Practice carried out the full design of an extension to the existing school utilising a timber frame structure incorporating a mixture of common rafters and traditional members supported by long span glulams which in turn are supported by timber frame walls. The timber frame walls provide a lateral stability to the building. The building is founded on a reinforced concrete slab, which in turn is supported on an arrangement of driven piles. Our Practice was also involved in the civils design for the project, including a complicated drainage design with diversion for an existing main run.

St White’s School, Cinderford

The full design of a part one and part two storey timber framed structure for the relocation of the existing primary school in Cinderford. The services also included full civil engineering design with pavement and drainage elements designed by our Practice.

The Beeches, Stroud

A design and build project within Gloucestershire County Council’s framework agreements. The project consisted of the construction of a new two-storey structural steelwork framed building to accommodate a dental surgery at ground floor and NHS offices at first floor. In addition to this element, the existing building was completely refurbished, the project was completed in December 2013.

Fleece Hotel Complex

This project consists of 12 buildings dating back to the 12th, 14th and 15th centuries. A number of later buildings were constructions in the 1960s and 1970s. The older buildings are Grade 1 and Grade 2 listed. Our services were required for repair works throughout the properties, including the specification of specialist carbon fibre repairs to timber beams. We worked closely with English Heritage and Conservation officers in order to provide the most practical structural solution whilst maintaining as much of the original materials as possible. We addressed overall stability issues with the properties, specified and oversaw demolition works to many of the 1960s and 1970s buildings to make the site more attractive to potential developers.

Farmors School, Sixth Form Block, Fairford

2013 – New sixth form block with link building to the existing school and alterations to the existing structure. Vaulted ceilings necessitated the design and detailing of portal framed steelwork. A long span steelwork truss was required to form open walkways. A bespoke steelwork canopy required an innovative structural solution.

Hangar 4 2015–2016

Project – A two-storey height steel frame extension to an existing WW2 hangar. The facility is clad in composite panels and incorporates a moveable crane. At ground level, specialist machinery is set into the ground on RC bases.
